Endoscopy is a medical procedure that involves the insertion of a long, thin tube directly into the body to observe an internal organ in detail. There are many types of endoscopy that view different organs. Here are some of the types of endoscopy related to gastroenterology:

• Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) or upper endoscopy: Scope goes through your mouth to look at your esophagus, stomach and the upper part of your small intestine.
• Colonoscopy: Scope goes through your anus to look at your entire large intestine (colon).
• Sigmoidoscopy: Scope goes through your anus to look at the lower part of your large intestine (sigmoid colon).
• Capsule endoscopy: Capsule endoscopy was developed in the mid-1990s and involves a wireless camera. The camera is small enough to fit into a capsule (roughly the size of a vitamin tablet) and can, therefore, be swallowed. As the capsule travels through the digestive tract, it takes thousands of pictures, which are transmitted to a device attached to a wearable belt. A capsule endoscopy images the small intestine, a difficult region to image using standard endoscopy².
• Anoscopy: Scope goes through your anus (butthole) to look at your anus and rectum³.
• Cystoscopy: Scope goes through your urethra (the tube that allows pee out of your body) to look at it and your bladder.
• Enteroscopy: Scope goes through your mouth (for upper enteroscopy) or your anus (for lower enteroscopy) to look at your small intestine².
• Arthroscopy: Scope goes through an incision above your joint to look for damage or conditions like arthritis.
• Bronchoscopy: Scope goes through your mouth or nostril to look at your trachea (windpipe) and lungs.
• Otoscopy: Scope goes through your ear to look at your ear canal and eardrum
